So obesity is the effect, and eating junk food is one of the causes. Let us club together cause and effect.

Now this becomes causality.

When you cannot control eating the junk food, this becomes automatic.

But why do you like junk food a lot?

On a deeper level, there is a biological causality which goes back to evolutionary time, say some millions of years ago. Our genes are more than that old.

Shocked?

From ancient time your body shaped by ancestors was adapted to a harsh environment, say Prakriti, which challenged us. We lived for survival, so your tongue automatically knows something tasty means more calories, and that means more energy.

Eating junk food is fine, but think for a moment, does our body need that energy which our early ancestors needed for survival?

There was no abundance at that time, so the sugar or high calorie intake made them survive the harsh environment full of challenges. Scrolling Instagram and eating Lays is hence actually dumb in this way.

But something in the body responds automatically and creates cravings which we will discuss below after one more simple example.

Now think about attraction towards the opposite gender and intimate private moments.

Why does that feel good?

It happens because we are genetically programmed for creation. The creation would help survival as one more member would be added to the group.

Now come back to the definition of Karana Sharira from Adi Shankaracharya. Well, what I explained above is not exactly the Karana defined by him but we will be inferring through the context that we made for causality.

It says Anirvachaniya, meaning that which cannot be put into words.

How will you bring the definition of those private moments to the world?

What is the feeling like, or why did it happen?

The cause was well embedded millions of years ago, or maybe more than that, hence that is Anadi (without beginning) and came forward into your genes.

How will you explain it?

It also says Shariradvayasya Karanam, which is the reason for the other two bodies. Well, it is creating other bodies certainly. While the indication is for Sukshma and Sthoola but we will learn that in a moment. For now, it also says Sat-svarupajnanam and Nirvikalpa-rupam. Now that’s about being ignorant of one’s true nature, and its appearance is formless.

On similar grounds to the above explanation and interpretation, Karana Sharira is the part of the psyche that is the cause of your whole existence as a Jiva. The unexplainable things in your life are embedded within the Karana expression of the consciousness, Brahman.

For example, say a neurodivergent individual like an autistic or dyslexic child exists somewhere, who always thinks, why he is different from others. He initially cannot explain these things through words and keeps on asking why I have been made this way.

Remember, Taare Jameen Par movie?

This inner feeling of being fundamentally different, the invisible wiring that shapes how he processes the entire world around him, is embedded deep within. It is not something he chose on a conscious level. It exists as a dormant seed before it blossoms into his daily reality. This is exactly how the Karana Sharira operates in every single one of us. It is the hidden blueprint, the ancient source code that runs the entire software of your personality and the hardware of your physical body. It dictates your deeply rooted tendencies before you even have a chance to formulate a thought about them.

Let us break down the word Anirvachaniya a bit more because it is absolutely fascinating.

It translates to that which cannot be brought into definite verbal determination.

Why can you not explain it with words?

Because words belong to the intellect. Words belong to the mind. The mind is part of the Sukshma Sharira, which is the subtle body. The subtle body is simply an effect of the causal body.

An effect can never fully comprehend its own cause.

A clay pot can never explain the potter.

Your mind trying to understand the Karana Sharira is like a flashlight trying to shine light on its own battery. The battery powers the light, but the light can never illuminate the battery.

That is why the deepest core of your tendencies, your deepest fears, and your unexplainable attractions are completely beyond words. You just feel them. You just experience their powerful effects without knowing their exact origin.

Then we have the word Anadi, which means beginningless. Think about this carefully. If we ask where a tree comes from, we say a seed. If we ask where that seed came from, we say an earlier tree. It is an infinite loop. If you try to find the absolute beginning of your desires or your ignorance, you will fail. Science tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes form.

Vedanta says the exact same thing about your causal tendencies.

The chain of cause and effect stretches back infinitely into the cosmos. Your current life, your current cravings for junk food, your current emotional triggers, they are not fresh creations. They are just the latest blossoms on a beginningless vine. This is why Shankaracharya calls it Anadi. You can never point your finger to a specific date in history and say this is the exact moment my ignorance started. It has always been there, traveling with you.

Now let us connect this to our daily experience because Vedanta is highly practical. It is not just theory.

You actually experience the Karana Sharira every single night.

When you are in deep, dreamless sleep, what happens to you?

You are completely blank. You do not know your name, you do not know your bank balance, you do not know if you are a man or a woman, and you do not know your worldly problems. Your physical body is resting, and your mind is completely switched off. The entire universe disappears for you. Yet you are still alive. You exist in a state of pure non knowing. This state of absolute ignorance but total peace is the direct experience of the causal body. It is called Avidya Rupam.

It is a thick blanket of ignorance where all your waking and dreaming desires are folded up into a tiny, dormant seed.

The moment you wake up in the morning, the seed sprouts again. The mind boots up and says I am hungry, I am stressed, I have to go to work. The causal body pushes out the subtle and gross bodies to interact with the world once again.

This is why the shloka calls it Sarvakaranam, the cause of all manifestation. Everything you do, every thought you think, every action you take, stems from this invisible storehouse.

Let us go back to the evolutionary biology example.

Our ancient ancestors survived because their causal blueprint held a deep seated drive for existence. That survival instinct became the cause for developing sharper minds to hunt and stronger bodies to run. The internal desire shaped the external reality.

Today you might not be hunting saber toothed tigers, but that same primal blueprint is making you chase money, status, and validation on social media. The platforms are new, but the causal programming is millions of years old. The Karana Sharira is the master string puller. You think you are making conscious choices, but most of the time you are just playing out the ancient scripts written in your causal body.

This brings us to the absolute core of the definition.

Svatmasvarupajnanam.

This is the ultimate punchline of the shloka. It means the non recognition of one intrinsic Self nature.

Why do we have this causal body in the first place?

Why are we trapped in this loop of desires and automated responses?

It is simply because we do not know who we really are. We suffer from a fundamental case of mistaken identity. We think we are the body and mind, completely forgetting our true limitless nature.

Imagine you are watching an incredibly immersive movie. You get so lost in the story that you start crying when the main character loses his family. You get terrified when the villain attacks. Your physical heart rate goes up and you sweat.

But wait a minute.

You are just sitting in a comfortable chair in a perfectly safe, air conditioned theater.

Why are you suffering?

You are suffering because for those two hours, you forgot you are the watcher. You completely identified with the projection on the screen. The moment the movie ends and the theater lights turn on, you take a deep breath and realize you were always safe. The fear was real to your body, but the cause of the fear was pure illusion.

Our entire lives operate exactly like this movie theater. You are pure consciousness. You are the silent, eternal, unchanging observer. Vedanta calls this Brahman in universal level or the Atman in an individual level. But because of this beginningless ignorance, you forget your observer status. You get glued to the screen of life. You look at your physical body and say this is me. You look at your anxious mind and say I am anxious. You identify completely with the temporary costumes. This profound forgetting is the Karana Sharira. It is not a mystical glowing energy ball floating in space. It is a sheer psychological and existential blindness.

It is the very principle of ignorance that makes you mistake the temporary for the permanent, and the unreal for the real.

The beauty of Shankaracharya definition is how clinical and precise it is. He looks at human suffering like a master physician diagnosing a disease. He sees you suffering from obesity or emotional pain. He traces that effect back to its cause which is your mental craving. Then he traces that mental craving back to its ultimate root cause.

And what does he find at the bottom of it all?

Nothing but a blank slate of ignorance. A simple absence of self knowledge. That is why the causal body is described as Nirvikalpa or formless. Ignorance does not have a physical shape.

What is the shape of not knowing how to speak Chinese?

It has no shape. It is just an absence of knowledge. In the same way, the causal body is the absence of self observation combined with the latent seeds of all your past impressions.

When people make the Karana Sharira sound exotic, they completely miss the point. They turn a practical psychological framework into a fantasy novel. Tattvabodha is not trying to teach you magic. It is trying to show you the mechanics of your own suffering. As long as the root cause remains intact, the symptoms will inevitably return. You can go to the gym to fix your gross body. You can go to therapy to fix your subtle mind. But until you address the fundamental ignorance hiding in your causal body, you will eventually create new desires, new attachments, and new forms of suffering. You cannot permanently kill a weed by cutting its leaves. You have to pull it out by the root.

So how do you destroy the Karana Sharira if it is made of ignorance?

You cannot destroy it with physical action. You cannot meditate it away by physical force or extreme fasting. The only thing that destroys ignorance is knowledge but Karana will always remain in some way or other. Just like the only thing that destroys darkness is light. When you bring a lamp into a dark room, the darkness does not fight back. It does not escape through the window. It simply ceases to exist because it was never a real physical thing to begin with. It was just the absence of observatory light. When you attain true self knowledge, when you observe through direct experience that you are the eternal watcher and not the automated mind body machine, the causal body burns to ashes.

But to ground up your observation you would need a strong grounding too, you can read the previous article on Pratimbavada to understand it.

Until that inner metacognition happens through your sadhana, every action you take leaves a trace in this causal storehouse. Every time you give in to unconscious cravings like eating that junk food or chasing temporary pleasures, you are watering the seeds of your causal body.

You are making the automated programming stronger and your bondage deeper. But every time you act with awareness, every time you pause and observe your cravings without blindly following them, you are roasting those seeds. A roasted seed might still look like a seed, but it can never sprout again into a new plant. You can still enjoy life, you can still eat good food, and you can still love deeply, but you do it as a conscious master, not as an automated biological slave.

This is the ultimate freedom that Vedanta promises. The definition of Karana Sharira is not just a philosophical concept to be debated by scholars. It is a wake up call for every single person. It is a highly detailed map showing you exactly where you are stuck in the cycle of cause and effect, so you can finally find the exit. When you deeply analyze and understand your own causal psyche, you stop blaming the external world for your problems. You stop getting lost in the temporary drama of the physical and subtle bodies. Instead, you turn your attention inward to the very root of your existence, slowly untying the knots of ignorance until you observe the boundless freedom, absolute peace, and eternal reality of your true nature.

People give highly mystic explanations of Karana Sharira as something exotic which is beyond the level of understanding and heavily fantasized.
