There is a growing fascination with combining ancient Indian wisdom with modern science. Many often seek to validate the profound insights of the rishis through the lens of recent scientific discoveries. Observers note how the fundamental elements of nature, the pancha mahabhutas, interact with the human senses. Attempts are then made to explain this experience through the quantum scale. Discussions frequently speak of energy bundles, the cosmic spin of electrons, and the resonance that occurs when atomic particles interact with sensory nerves. It is tempting to describe this interaction as a cosmic dance of photons and electrons, where atoms absorb and emit energy, creating a rhythm that brings joy to a living being.
Looking at the 1916 radiation theories developed by Max Born, Einstein, Planck, Rayleigh, Jeans, and Boltzmann, a brilliant explanation emerges regarding how energy exchange excites atoms and triggers interactions. This is evident again in the 2004 Nobel Prize research on olfactory receptors. That research proposed that the smell of a fragrance is decoded by the brain through a process called electron tunneling, where the vibrational frequency of molecules matches energy gaps to trigger sensory organs. Science masterfully explains how color is an illusion created by frequencies of light, and how sound originates from the transfer of energy and momentum.

However, it is incredibly important to avoid a major mistake in understanding. Attributing the profound spiritual state of “Ananda” to the mechanical transfer of physical energy across atoms limits the true understanding of reality. Radiation theory and quantum physics explain physical energy transfer at an atomic level perfectly. Yet, they do not account for how physical energy transforms into subjective, conscious joy.
An atom cannot give anyone an “anubhava” or direct experience. The brain merely constructs an image of that atom. Electrons and photons are objects, and an object cannot create an experience unless the subtle essence of that experience is already present. In the realm of direct spiritual experience, the hierarchy of creation operates differently than the physical chemistry observed under a microscope. It is not the gross physical elements, or mahabhutas, that create the subtle sensory potentials known as tanmatras. Rather, the tanmatras create the mahabhutas.
To understand how the universe was formed, one must look at Samkhya philosophy as a cosmic blueprint rather than human biology. At the dawn of creation, the first principle to emerge is Mahat, also known as Buddhi. Buddhi is not the physical brain. It is the cosmic governing framework containing four attributes: dharma (innate nature), jnana (experiential knowledge), virag (dispassion), and aishwaryam (governance). This supreme intelligence dictates how the universe operates perfectly and invariably. From Buddhi arises Ahamkara, the principle of doing, and then Manas. It is essential not to fall into the trap of identifying Manas purely as mundane human desire. It is simply an instrument capable of deliberation, acting as the cosmic seat of desire and decision making processes which eventually reach back to Buddhi.
For the universe to manifest in a measurable way, Manas requires instruments of measurement. The desire to measure spatial differences creates sound, paired with the instrument of hearing. The desire to measure force and pressure manifests as touch, measured by the skin. The measurement of form pairs with vision, taste pairs with the tongue, and smell pairs with the nose. These subtle essence pairings are the tanmatras, the smallest measurable building blocks of reality. Before the physical world can exist, there must also be ten faculties of action, or karmendriyas, to manipulate, move, and replicate the surrounding reality. Only after this vast, intricate cosmic architecture is established do the five physical elements finally appear. These are universal principles, meaning that even if living biological organisms were completely absent, the underlying cosmic framework would remain.

Yet, even Samkhya requires the clarity of pure non duality. While the ancient dialogue between Kapila and Devahuti beautifully combines devotion and knowledge for spiritual practice, the focus must shift toward the absolute truth of the Purusha. The Purusha Sukta does not state that a “Purusha tattva” is transformed or reduced into material nature. Purusha is not a mere element. It is the indivisible Whole. The Sukta describes the supreme cosmic being where three parts remain unmanifest and one part becomes the vast cosmos, but the absolute is never diminished.
This leads to a profound thought experiment. What if every conscious being disappears one day? Will the universe still exist? What remains when there is no observer, no Drasta?
Existence as defined by physical matter is a construct of science and society. When descending into subatomic states, protons dissolve into quarks, and quarks dissolve into the theoretical strings of String Theory. But there is a major difference between the strings of the physicist and the “Spanda” of Parama Shiva described by ancient sages like Vasugupta. Strings are defined by scientists who operate within a created mental framework to generate physical evidence. The Spanda is the primal throb of consciousness seen by the rishis who perceive reality beyond all scientific models. Will the Spanda exist without the Drasta? The answer lies in realizing that the observer and the observed are one.
Science is undeniably wonderful and highly effective for generating material wealth and progress, exactly as Kautilya outlined in the Arthashastra. When paired with technology, it creates powerful tools that sustain the world. Yet, as the Ishavasya Upanishad reminds the seeker, material sciences still operate strictly within the domain of “Avidya” or material knowledge. True “Vidya” or spiritual wisdom arises only from Anubhava, the direct realization gained through spiritual practice. Knowledge of the absolute cannot simply emerge from Avidya because the brain only constructs images of atoms, rather than experiencing the absolute truth directly. Both domains are needed, but they must not be confused.

This distinction highlights the problem with using Indian Knowledge Systems merely as proof for Western science. Science relies greatly on logical inference, known as Anumana pramana. If everything could be understood purely through such logic, there would be no need for Pratyaksha pramana, which is direct, unmediated realization. In truth, all inference is ultimately grounded in, and subordinate to, direct experience. When cosmic principles like form and taste are reduced to mere physical disciplines within a scientific framework, they lose their deeper spiritual significance. This reduction is the very trap of the Manas. It causes a fragmentation of attention brilliantly warned against in the Yoga Sutras regarding the cycles of suffering, cause, and liberation.
Grasping the complete picture requires recognizing that Ananda is an absolute state of being, not a fleeting feeling of sensory pleasure or earthly happiness. It is the divine play of universal consciousness. Without a complete grasp of this deeper stream of reality, true dharmic technologies may not be possible. If Ananda were merely about a happy physiological state triggered by sensory inputs, the architects of the modern entertainment industry would be the greatest rishis by now. In a true state of Ananda, the illusion of materialism and the construct of ego completely dissolve. Reality is not experienced through atoms. It is experienced through consciousness itself, revealing that the universe is not just a machine of colliding particles, but a magnificent, purposeful manifestation of the Universal consciousness.
